I just think that when you present a hypothetical for discussion, you have an obligation to stick with it as presented.

That's one of my basic rules for comfortable discourse.

Or if you're going to change it, then be upfront and say "let's look at a different scenario. Now assume . . ." and people can start over.

But shifting in midstream and then criticizing people because they responded accurately to what you originally presented is, IMO, dishonest discussion.
