Whitewater was nothing more than a desperate last-ditch attempt by the right-wing to find something, ANYTHING to knock CLinton off his pedestal. Since they controlled congressional subpoena powers, they basically trumped up the Whitewater charges (which were miniscule and mainly BS) to be able to carry out an exhausting witch-hunt into Clinton's life and bedroom in an attempt to find anything they could sting him with. Everyone already knew CLinton fooled around (but elected him twice anyway) but now the GOP "investigators" had to prove it. All the other Filegate, Nannygate, Travelgate, Kitchensinkgate etc. was all BS, but sex was real. So that's what they settled for.

It was a very low point in US politics. It hurt the country but helped Clinton-haters (though it cost them casualties too like Speaker Livingston and all the Whitewater chairmen). It did help put GW in power but it also robbed the GOP of moral integrity and may come back to hit them in the face in 2004 as they once again resort to sleazy politics, now attacking our war hero candidates with phony trumped up innuendos.
