N.O. emergency communications improved NEW ORLEANS — Terabeam Corp., a provider of broadband wireless systems, today announced the Office of Homeland Security and Public Safety has deployed its Free Space Optics system, the Terabeam Elliptica, for use in its network in New Orleans. The Office of Homeland Security and Public Safety in New Orleans has been working on its network in New Orleans and seven surrounding parishes. The idea is to protect critical infrastructure and to ensure communications during a heightened period of threat to national security or in the event of a natural disaster or emergency. The Office of Homeland Security and Public Safety has successfully tested and deployed an FSO system in its New Orleans network. The system carries voice, video and data traffic at up to 100 megabits per second. “The system was truly put to the test during a recent tropical storm," said Col. Terry Ebbert, director of the Office of Homeland Security and Public Safety in New Orleans. "While parts of the city were flooded, the Terabeam system stayed operational throughout the entire storm. We've been very pleased with the performance of the system and, particularly, with how quickly it can be deployed. We plan to use it in our networks to ensure domestic preparedness and to enable rapid response during an emergency situation." The Terabeam Elliptica system uses FSO technology to send an invisible, eye-safe beam of laser light through the air. The signal is carried on the same kind of light that is inside a fiber optic cable, but is done so through a wireless connection, and is directed from rooftops, towers or directly through windows to another such location.
