Phil > ... the US can't survive as the world headquarters for big business alone. There is a constituency of common people who they cannot forever ignore.

Nevertheless, the US IS the world headquarters for big business and capitalism and big business DOES call the shots. Please believe me, I'm not saying that as a socialist or even someone who is ideologically opposed to the business ethos, merely as an observer. Furthermore, I'm trying to make sense of a series of bizarre and traditionally un-American developments, particularly the urge to empire and the tyrannical control of the populace by coercive means.

Throughout my lifetime, I have looked to the US as the world center, if you will, besides of capitalism, of liberty, fairness and democracy. Perhaps, I too, was deluded but nonetheless that's the way I saw America, and I might tell you that I had many pro-communist, anti-American friends, particularly at university. who tried very hard, and unsuccessfully, to shake those beliefs out of me. I always endeavored to find a "good" reason for whatever America did, even if it was a contentious one.

Perhaps that is why I am now so angry and disillusioned --- but it is not with the American people per se --- it is with those who are running the country. They have broken the spell and I see them for what they are. Indeed, I am sure there are many others in this world who feel the way I do.

My thoughts and my best wishes are with the American people because I see that, besides the Muslims, the Americans, themselves, have been the prime target of their own government. In fact, if I did not care for them and wish them well, I would not spend so many hours, days and weeks of my life raving on this forum about the injustices that are being carried out against them and in their name against others.

I am amused about the way you find me -- "fatalistic, angry and pessimistic". To that you can add cynical! But may I say that, despite my shortcomings, I'm pleased you like to converse with me because I do know that I am a bit much for most people. May I also say that I very much value your opinion because, even though I may argue with you, I know whatever you say is genuine.
