I don't really mess with them, I just have the conversation on my terms. It must be a tough job, I wouldn't want to do it. I'm sympathetic, I've never just hung up on them. I let them run their spiel, then I respond. One of them hung up laughing. The other one was annoyed, I'll admit...

I don't think anyone is blaming the people on the phones. I've been a phone monkey myself, and you're right, it is psychologically draining work. And I feel sorry for the poor slob on the other end of the phone that has to endure being hung up or screamed at time after time after time. But frankly, my sympathy has long since run short on supply.

The problem is the business practices of their employers, who engage in what amounts to harrassment. The return on telemarketing is, IIRC, something on the order of 1-7% of those called. It is offending a lot of people's sense of propriety for a very small fulfillment of demand.
