I suppose there are some people here who think Harris walks on water -- they would be the same people who would kiss Klein's beer stein. Not an inconsiderable number, but obviously not deep thinkers. Personally my impression of Harris was that his was a PR effort more than an undertaking to promote substantive change. Imposing across-the-board cuts to spending may look tough and determined, but it's not very thoughtful and almost certain not to be efficient. And really, now that he's been gone for a while, what is different? Eves is pumping money into health care, and people are still miffed at long waiting lists. I can't imagine a circumstance under which I'd vote for the federal Liberals. I'd vote for a Harris-led conservative party -- as I would if Harper were leader. If it were McKay I'd have to think about it, but the alternative would be to spoil my ballot, not to vote Liberal. Even if Harris is just a thick golf pro, I can see some advantage in the short-term to his getting the leadership. Let's face it, this has been a game of perception for years. The media and the Bay Street bag men think there are two "right-wing" parties, and that's a bad thing. The fact that there is nothing "right" or "conservative" about the Progressive Conservative Party is irrelevant. Hal Jackman, Peter White, Jeffery Simpson -- they want to make up for a decade which saw the PC party bereft of leadership, vision, policy or skill, and reign in the embarrassing rednecks in the west. Putting Harris ostensibly in charge, even on an interim basis, cleans up the optics and makes plausible the plea to let bygones be bygones.
