No problem, except as always the best judge is personal experience[*]. I warmly suggest anybody to go and see these places.

re >>Even the Umayyad dynasty, begun by Abd al-Rahman in 756, was far from enlightened. Issues of succession were often settled by force.<< ... which was cca 70 years (seven Oh!) after Hijra! And the distance from Mecca to Gibraltar is in the order of a couple of thousand miles...And, between 756 and 1492 (or something like this, Isabella entering Alhambra) it's 700+ years. Should we not allow our fellow humanity the right to change, learn, move on?

re >>... There were terms for a Christian living under Arab rule (mozarab), a Muslim living under Christian rule (mudejar), a Christian who converted to Islam (muladi), a Jew who converted to Christianity (converso), a Jew who converted but remained a secret Jew (marrano) and a Muslim who converted to Christianity (morisco)<< So what?!... Im what French would call catholique non-practiquant, and my neighbour is a protestant (lutheran) and the couple on the other side is I guess agnostic. These attributes get a dangerous connotation only, when the atmosphere lets them (see for instance Nazi times here in Germany, or Haiti in classical period after independence).

In any case using those times as a parallel to what's going on now needs MUCH stretching.

btw, Charles V could be termed the first Stalinist of our times - except there may have been others before him ... lemme think ;) -
