I've had the Walter Gropius biography in the house for a few days now, but haven't had a chance to take a serious look yet. But I came across a somewhat perplexing anecdote in Virginia Postrel's Substance of Style. Gropius was hired to do the design work on a new dorm at Harvard and he had the furniture fixed in place. When a student reporter asked him what if someone didn't like the way in which the furniture was placed, he replied, "Then they are neurotic."

What was up with that guy?
