I used to not skim, but that was a long time ago. I am now pickier, to ensure that my interest is held. Sorry for the confusion, of course.

I went to an exhibit at the East Building of the National Gallery on Saturday, paintings and collages by the African- American artist Romare Bearden, whose parents relocated from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Harlem, and became caught up in the Harlem Renaissance, and associated with leading figures, like Langston Hughes, Paul Robeson, and Duke Ellington. He started out aiming at a medical career, but took a turn towards art. It took decades before he could support himself by his art, but he achieved some fame before that. His work is very good, and shows an interesting interaction between modernist trends that he assimilated when he was developing, social awareness issues, and issues of personal expression. Anyway, you might find it interesting. It will be there until about the end of the year.........
