I just went and read that report. I hadn't realized that this study included all mental health therapists and doctors and had no breakdown for the different areas in which abuse occurred. I wonder what percentage of that very large population massage therapists would be? Do we know that, or what proportion of complaints stem from massage alone? Without a more specific and controlled study, it seems that drawing too many conclusions is iffy.

"How can you estimate those who don't report if they don't report? The source you cited was obviously an advocate. I suggest you take that figure with a grain of salt."

A good researcher would survey clients in an annonymous fashion to gather support for this type of data. I did take it with a grain of salt. ... which is far from being outright dismissive.

I have also used some common sense in considering the population of people who become masseurs and masseusses. I have no research data on this but my anectotal observation is that they are not typically restricted in their sexual conduct by traditional convention.

Please bear in mind that this is one of the bugaboos of this kind of reporting--interest groups always say that their numbers are small because people don't report.

In addition, this is not a scientific survey, apparently, but just self-reporting. Those who feel aggrieved will probably report many times, and may well report things that wouldn't qualify as reportable if a responsible controlled study were being done.

I take such numbers as being about as valuable as the results of internet "polls."
