The draft did give some men the push to enlist first.
It also gave many the push to dodge the draft, join the Air Guard or get deferrments, like all the Bushies did.

That doesn't mean Kerry was any less willing to serve his country or fight in combat. He could have easily avoided service and combat if he'd wanted to. The rich and well-connected could always manage deferrments if they wanted to. Cheney got one to go to law school.

Now we don't have a draft so men like Kerry wouldn't even consider joining the military unless they wanted to be career soldiers. For you to use the draft to brand people as less than patritoic is really weak and phony. John went, John led, fought, killed and took three wounds. Your insinuation that there is anything less than heroic about this is just partisan BS.

Bush joined the Guard because of the draft too, then went AWOL to avoid having to go to Vietnam when his turn was coming up soon. Technically, he was a deserter and should have either served time or been drafted into the Army for four yers. That was the law. But Daddy could keep him out of trouble.

Bull. Lots of us were afraid of getting drafted. We didn't join up; we stayed in school, went to Canada, did alternate service, etc. He didn't have to join to stay out.
