The bigger the herring, the better the distraction from the real issue, which is the so-called "bipartisan" spending spree. The spending spree may not have been so big had the administration made clear how much Iraq would cost. Up til about two months ago, the administration waffled when asked how much the war would cost and were hinting that there were ways to keep costs down; that the war would not be the albatross that some were suggesting. Shortly thereafter, non gov't military pundits began to estimate the cost of the war.........estimates that peaked at around $600 billion. Soon after, the administration came in with their $87 billion request. They are still vague on how much things will cost next year. Is that a reasonable way to run a budget? So here you have the Democrats........they opposed the tax cuts, they can't get clear answers from the WH re the cost of the war and Reps. are approving pork for their districts left and right. I am not surprised they are not showing greater care when it comes to spending. The current GOP will spend what they don't spend in any case. May be you should be directing your criticism directly at the GOP...they control Congress and the presidency. They seem to want their cake and eat it too. Really, I've never know the GOP to be such spendthrifts........and I am serious about that. WA state is controlled by Dems who are often accused of being THE spendthrifts, and yet, WA is cutting expenses left and right. The Dem., lameduck governor just recommended that the state cut out the presidential primaries next year and save $6 million.....since they are more for show than anything else. I wish the Congressional GOP were showing that level of responsiblity and concern. ted
