They were often the officers or the pilots of Air Force and Navy planes but they served nonetheless. After all, this is their country as well. That tradition continued into the Korean War as well but began to die off. Those were big wars in different times. Wars were a meat grinder. Times changed. Our military personnel is less than 1% of population, and dropping. The primary mission is to win wars against foreign enemies, not to fight on domestic battleground of class warfare. With this war, not only are they are not serving but they are not paying either. They very much are paying, as I just showed you in my last post.In the last 6 years prior to 2000, the budget deficit was a thing of the past. We are short of funds again because of poor fiscal planning. Make it 3 years including 2000. As far as poor planning, that is part of the problem, as is recession, deadliest attack on the US soil and 2 foreign wars.I am amazed that I having this discussion with a conservative. What is happening to the GOP in this country? I think the GOP has figure out the game of chicken they kept losing. The Democrats raised spending, and GOP did the prudent thing and agreed to a tax hike. Bush is trying the opposite, which is to cut taxes and force Democrats (and Republicans) to cut spending - well, at least that was the theory. Now, Republicans are as guilty of overspending as Democrats. The logic.....they barely have enough food to eat and pay rent. How can they afford to pay taxes when they can not afford to eat? The logic is that they will vote for only the amount of government they can afford. This is unfortunately completely lost on the GOP. It is a big strategic error started by Reagan, and things are getting worse. At some point, there will be majority of population who will not be paying any taxes whatsoever, but they will vote themselves benefits. It is a complete disconnect. Joe
