There doesn't appear to be much effort by the media to expose the obvious lies

They've got control and manipulation of the WH press corps down to a science.

It will take a few to fall on their swords to break the logjam. I think it's happening, judging by recent conferences w. WH and DOJ.

ASHCROFT just pissed off the press corps mightily a few minutes ago... he arrogantly walked off during a question about the CIA WH flap, leaving reporters muttering angrily

Such as, "The only inquiry made by the White House was Scott McClellan asked Rove if he did it. Rove said no and the matter has been dropped as far as the White House is concerned.

Except that McClellan danced around the questions that asked him if he'd directly asked Rove this question.

That evasion spoke volumes, IMO.
