"Ashcroft should recuse himself and let an independent investigation go forward. But he wont because this WH is very arrogant, secretive and never fires anyone unless they tell the truth to the media like Lawrence Lindsay did."

Let's not forget that Bush fired treasury secretary Paul O'Neill for telling the truth too. O'Neill did have some choice comments about the lack of honesty in this administration. He said that it is all about spin, deceiving the people.

Look what you got in his place... John (begging in China while George begs in Europe) Snow.

Q: Scott, the statement you gave about why there shouldn't be a special prosecutor was almost word for word what the Clinton people said in 1994 about why there shouldn't be a special prosecutor in Whitewater. Why should it stand now if it didn't stand then?
Mr. McClellan: Ken, I just reject that comparison.

Our concern has been that you, and the Department of Justice generally, face an inescapable political conflict of interest in investigating campaign fundraising violations that may involve senior Administration officials. As you yourself have recognized in testimony before Congress, such a conflict inevitably arises whenever an Attorney General, appointed and removable by the President, is asked to investigate possible wrongdoing by senior Executive Branch officials.

Since the person in question was not a CIA operative but a consultant and was known around DC to do work for the CIA it seems hard to justify wasting money on an independent counsel.
