I could see skipping the 22 and going for the 35.

OK here goes. Things are not as being reported by the Demos and the press (imagine that!).

The F-35 uses stealth technology. It does not replace the F-22 as reported by some demos. It replaces the F-16.

It is not going to be F-22 OR F-35...It is going to be
F-22 plus F-16 or F-22 plus F-35.
The F-35 adds enormous dimension to the F-22's capabilities, far far beyond the F-16's capabilities.

The real debate is over payload and turnaround time.

The F-35 is faster and flies much further than the F-16 and it is virtually unseeable electronically, but it has a lower weapons payload....which means it must have one-shot one-kill capability. Rumsfeld correctly insists this that that capability is now a virtual reality. We just proved the weapons system on a battlefield, removing that objection.

The F16 has become quite vulnerable to our likely opponents' battlefield weaponry.

The Air Force wants the F35 (imo) because of the Stealth capability. Afterall, it protects both the aircraft and pilot.
I believe SF wants the F35 because the STOL capability means short and primitive battlefield runways can be used to drastically reduce refuel/re-arm time and increase support to A Teams.

USAF believes the B1, B2, F22 and F35 will be an unstoppable combination for years. We need that kind of capability.

The weekend after this, I am a guest speaker at the Air Commando Association annual in Florida. I'll ask for more info about this subject.
