Short answer for many....yes....but it depends how well you know your broker, or what sort of account you have, and, and...ie, while the cert is sitting in your bottom drawer and not in your account, you could short the stock, then cover by depositing the cert back into your account.

IMO nothing wrong with holding in cert form, if you plan on holding for a long time......or are in desperate need of asswipe or wallpaper.

I personally, never in 11 years of trading call in Certs.
Reason=IF the stock runs, and you have the certs in the drawer, how are you going to sell?You have to send them in to your broker again, and then sell.That takes time, and can cost you dearly.Here we lose money,at times, by not looking at the monitor for a couple of minutes, and miss the runs.
No way certs in the drawer.Only at the Broker.IMO
