China fears property sharks out of control
By Richard Spencer in Beijing
(Filed: 01/10/2003)

The authorities ordered a mass round-up of victims of China's rapacious property developers yesterday, but indicated that many government leaders consider their grievances genuine.

The arrests of 85 people in Beijing in the early hours coincided with a growing belief in high places that the country's property industry is getting out of control.

As the demonstrators were being taken away, the China Daily newspaper accused local government officials and private developers of conniving to deprive residents of compensation and "trampling on their property rights".

To party officials' dismay, the clearance of old housing to build smart flats and offices in the booming eastern cities is China's biggest single cause of public protest.

Noisy demonstrations by home-owners claiming to have been forced out without proper prices paid for their houses occur regularly in Beijing and Shanghai city halls.
