IMO strong August and September auto sales are the direct result of refi boom and Bush checks. Many people who locked their refi rates in June closed their deals in September. With refi boom over I don't see a catalyst for increased consumer spending going forward. OTOH I don't see it falling off the cliff. ContraryInvestor had a discussion on a fact that sales to inventory ratio has been going down for many months. Inventory replenishing may propel economy for some time. Although besides cars I don't see much what is maid in USA which would require significant inventory rebuild.
