Nadine,

The Democrats cannot lose on this, so hence the interest. If Novak doesn't 'out' his source they can make political hay and insinuate anything. If he is forced to 'out' the source, the 'scandal' morphs into a freedom of the press issue.

John

<<I'm still looking at this mess and going, 'why has this has become a firestorm exactly?' I'm just not sure where the fuel is coming from. >>
It seems a CRIME has been committed in Washington. Not the everyday stabbing, shooting, murder, or rage, that is so prevalent there. But an actual LAW seems to have been broken (maybe) because someone said something. So this is a job for the Press who have sent out bloodhounds to talk to the usual suspects in the Administration and will keep us informed on an hourly basis as to whether a crime was actually committed or not.
Naturally we wont hear any of the details, because if someone is falsely accused that would be a CRIME in itself, and may bring down PUNISHMENT on the Press.
So any facts discovered will be presented in the customary manner as suspicions or innuendos.

I'm just not sure where the fuel is coming from.

Been researching this on Lexis-Nexis -- the firestorm SHOULD have started back on July 14, when Novak first ran his column naming Plame. There were plenty of outraged screams in the media then but it just didn't get traction.

Traction started around the end of September, about the same time that the 9th Circuit en banc ruled that the Florida recall election could go forward, and Arnold really pulled ahead, and also about the same time that Wesley Clark threw his name into the ring. And now Rush is in the middle of what appears to be a manufactured shit-storm.

Hmmm. I've heard that Howard Dean says he'll get rid of Terry McAuliffe if he's elected, and rid the Democratic heirarchy of the rest of the Clintonistas.

Could be that anything that makes Bush and/or Republicans in general look bad will reflect on Arnold? Could be that the McAuliffe/Clinton Democrat national machine is trying to show that they still have chops?

Let's wait until after the California election and see whether things calm down.
