Rational costs? Why are the proposed budgets for the new prisons in Iraq priced at $50,000 per bed? This is more than double the construction costs of prisons built here at home.

I'll bet that Saddam didn't spent $500 per bed on his prisons.

What the $87 billion represents is state of the art American construction, materials, engineering, labor...all transported half way around the world.

Wouldn't it make more sense to use Iraqi methods and means in the reconstruction of Iraq? They have engineers and architects and construction workers that can design and build their own infrastructure. We should be advising them, if and when they ask for the help. The Iraqi people want to govern their own affairs.

The only reason for the "American style" reconstruction is the American companies that will be cashing in the contracts. Cash that we will print up and then future generations will be paying for. All this while our own infrastructure is crumbling and unemployment continues to hamper any recovery.

Yes it's a grand day for Haliburton, but it's a sad day for the average Joe taxpayer.
