Yes, coal mining is one of the top items in the subsidies list, about 3 billion €/year. There's an ongoing struggle in the government between economy minister Clement (who comes from Northrhine-Westphalia which still has a couple of coal mines) and the Greens who fiscally are more conservative than the conservatives.

BTW, today finance minister Eichel has published the latest annual subsidies report. Here's a bar chart 1970-2003:
