Boy, will you have windmills out there killing birds! Some clever birds will adapt :-) Your Union featherbedded coal costs twice as much to produce as the coal in the rest of Europe. Yes, coal mining is one of the top items in the subsidies list, about 3 billion €/year. There's an ongoing struggle in the government between economy minister Clement (who comes from Northrhine-Westphalia which still has a couple of coal mines) and the Greens who fiscally are more conservative than the conservatives. BTW, today finance minister Eichel has published the latest annual subsidies report.
