I think they better understood the message of Sadat's Jerusalem trip of 1977 which made peace a possibility.

In 1971, Sadat was the new president of Egypt and too weak to make peace. His 1971 "peace" proposal to the UN was belied by his open promises to Egyptians and to the PLO not to make peace.

You don't seriously think that Egypt's military power scared Israel into signing the peace treaty with Egypt and giving up the Sinai?
