The idea of limiting the Federal Government and returning power back to the states would be a powerful draw to a large segment of society. It would be difficult to find ordinary Americans who think the Fed doesn't have enough power. What swept Reagan into office was that people believed he would shrink government (which never happened). Few people would support a party that touted the goals of legalizing drugs and prostitution.
