We're wining this war. It may appear that the insurgents are becoming bolder in attacking a meeting in the city council building, but it's really a sign of "desperation" (new speak, 1984).

U.S. soldiers came under fire Thursday near the Fallujah mayor's office and killed one of their attackers, an American officer said. None of the Americans was hurt in the attack by three gunmen.

Two girls were caught in the crossfire and injured, Lt. Col. Brian Drinkwine said. Their condition was not known. Witnesses said a woman and child were hit.

"While we were conducting a meeting in the city council building, we were fired upon," Drinkwine said, referring to the building where the mayor has his office. "We returned fire and killed one enemy."
