<<<"That's why we went to war in Iraq," said Dr McKenzie. "Gas might have comparable reserves to oil, but it's not in the right place and we don't really have the infrastructure to transport it.">>>

Interesting theory, but way off the mark. The real threat to US oil barons posed by the Middle East is their capacity to over produce, which causes unpredictable price moves US companies are helpless to manipulate. Even assuming the estimates quoted in the article are accurate, where I learned math 3500 billion barrels worth of reserves divided by 25 billion per year in consumption, equals a 140 year supply. Obviously, it's not that quite that simple, but the concept of running short in 7 years is absurd.

The reason the oil companies declared war on Iraq is the US had dealt with the evil Saddam in such an underhanded manner he got annoyed and kicked all the US oil companies out of the country. The first Gulf war put production back in US control through the UN oil for food program. The evil Saddam got around the sanctions by creating a black market for the excess, which put him back in a position to affect supplies on the world markets.

With the US back in control of Iraqi oil, none of the US oil companies have to worry about seeing Regular at a buck a gallon ever again. "That's why we went to war with Iraq.".
