My point is that the people should have been fired by their managers, not by the HR director. He has his own subordinates to fire. <g> He shouldn't have to fire everybody else's, too.

It's true that when there are layoffs, the pink slip is signed by the HR director. That's just one more manager, the big boss, who is a wimp and won't sign it himself. Do you think that the HR director decides to have a layoff? The HR director is the one in the trenches trying to make the president's or the board's layoff as painless and efficient as he can. I've seen layoffs. I've been party to implementing layoffs. The HR folks use every tool available to them to mitigate the pain.
