If I print out a peace of paper about news stories or commentary, and then hand it out to people then I am the press. If we require someone to be considered a "serious journalist" for a "serious newspaper" to be the press, then we create two problems. 1 - You create an unequality under the law. One group, selected by the editors or publishers of major publications, gets extra protection. and 2 - You run the risk of agents of the government who want to strip that protection, even from the "serious journalists" to do so by saying they don't meet the standard.
