Would the criticism of Dusty Baker been as muted if he were white? I don't know. I think you may have a point.......that some people may be afraid to voice their opinion because of color or to criticize a black player or Latino coach. There are so many people involved who can be sure of everyone's motivations. However, that's not what's happening with Rush. Rush is saying that the media is soft on McNabb because he's a black QB , not just a black player. Forget that blacks have been playing in national sports for years.......because McNabb is a black QB, the muted criticism from the media must be special. Rush has to take it to a higher level to make it work. It might make some sense if McNabb were the first black QB or this was his first season. But, to my knowledge, neither is true. What is true is that Rush opened his mouth in the same way he does on his radio show. However, the ESPN arena is a much bigger one, and the world did not like what they heard. For years now, Rush has had a free ride. He's yapped his lungs off saying whatever flimsy thing filled his brain. It didn't matter how scathing it was. Well, this time, he overdid it. Imagine a white coach trying to explain away his team's lousy record, and he said it's because other teams had more black players, and blacks do better in warm weather. This coach would be fired in a microsecond. If there was a reason to believe that people were light on McNabb, I think its because every athlete goes through dry spells and anyone who has played a sport or followed sports knows how frustrating that can be. Case in point.....Freddy Garcia is supposed to be the Mariner's star pitcher. His performance this summer stunk up the joint. Early on, people started to criticize......accusing him of playing the playboy role and not getting enough sleep at nite. Any fool could see he was trying.....he even started praying to God and doing the stations of the cross before getting on the mound. Finally, some journalists here in town said to lay off.....not because he was Latino but because Freddy Garcia is a serious player and a serious player would be very frustrated with his poor performance. People weren't being soft because he was Latino but instead they were trying to give him a break because it doesn't help to try and make a guy feel worse than he already does. You don't think McNabb is frustrated with himself? Last year, he came back from a broken leg to play fairly well. He was supposed to do even better this year, and instead, he's doing worse. In Rush's world, people don't give people breaks. They attack first and ask questions later. In Rush's world, race is a big issue so that any time a minority player is being given any sign of favoritism, it has to be racially motivated. IMO the BS is with Rush, not the rest of the media. ted
