There are many bad aspects to the occupation in Iraq. I remember telling some friends in '68, that our generation would be living with the consequences of Vietnam all of our lives - something most of them hadn't considered. A similar statement can and should be made about Iraq, if this continues much longer. Part of it is the deaths and maiming. But something that is rarely considered, is the brutalizing of young minds. A brutalization that's likely to be lasting.

Excited after a successful raid which netted several Iraqi suspects, a U.S. military police sergeant explained how one detainee was made to kneel with his head against the front of an armoured jeep while another vehicle was reversed towards him, stopping only when his head was in a vice between two bumpers.

"We scared the shit out of him!" the soldier laughed.
