Now I have to decide whether to frame it...or use it as a field knife while fishing and hunting.

I think you should use it.

After all, you don't want some wiseguy down the line making cracks about the knife that wasn't ever used but appears to have been dropped twice...

(BTW: Everyone in my family thought your "rifle" story was very funny.)

An old friend and I went to Ft Bragg this morning to receive our Yarborough Knives. Mine is serial number 0393

Thanks for telling us about that, Mike. I have some idea of what that must mean to you. Here is a URL that shows the knife (0002) you are talking about, and the History of it.

The Yarborough Knife
also known as the Special Forces Knife

General Background

The serial numbered knife is only available to members, past or present members of the US Army Special Forces, available through two means: issue and purchase.

The Yarborough Knife was conceived during an informal dinner discussion between LTG William P. Yarborough and LTG Brown. LTG Yarborough noted that it was too bad that Special Forces did not have a distinctive piece of edged weaponry that was issued to its members as did its ancestors in World War II – the First Special Service Force with its V-42 and the OSS with the Fairbairn-Sykes Knife.

The Yarborough Knife is a nearly 12.5-inch combat utility knife (seven inches of blade) produced exclusively for Special Forces soldiers. The knife is produced by Tactical and Survival Specialties, Inc., Harrisonburg, VA The designer of the knife is William W. Harsey who designs custom knives for the British SAS, Germany’s GSG-9 and COL Applegate, a collegue of MAJ Fairbairn, the infamous WWII instructor.
