This post raises interesting issues. Lots of argument out there that most folk in this country have friends and/or relatives who are gay and lesbian and thus will resent any attempt to demonize them. So it could easily work the opposite way. It's also worth noting that public opinion polls are less helpful on issues like this one. Respondents are more likely to offer what they consider the momentarily socially approved answer. The connection between their response on a questionnaire or to someone over a telephone and their action in a voting booth becomes more than usually problematic.
