As the continual stream of weapons caches confirm, it was not disarmed, certainly not in conventional weaponry. In WMDs, as Kay has demonstrated, it was ready to restart production, at least, the moment we got off its back. Nor is it yet clear what happened with the alleged stockpiles. Finally, the tenability of containment was in doubt. For example, perhaps half a million children died due to sanctions, because of the diversion of humanitarian funds by the regime. The infrastructure was decaying, even worse than we realized, so that the possibility of a humanitarian crisis of horrendous proportions was on the horizon. There was a good chance that the sons, who were monstrous, would succeed in retaining power, even if Saddam died, so that we might have to fret over Iraq, and expend resources for its containment, for decades longer. We had to resolve the matter.......
