No, they were not Germans. I do not recall the exact words but that was about Bergmann and Einstein - they thought about themselves as 1st Germans and then Jews but when Germans made them aware that they were not Germans they stopped been Germans. Both Bergmann and Einstein would object to be called Germans.

I mentioned once to a Jewish person that if Hitler had embraced the Jews he would have won the war. Kicked in the teeth on that one.
