I agree with you. I wouldn't deal with them either were I a candidate. Our sound bite environment, not to mention our dumb electorate, makes it impossible for that kind of complexity to be discussed. It's unfortunate that politicians don't answer those kinds of questions, but I don't know what else we can expect from them. Even when the scenario is real, it's tough. Did you vote for such and such? Then you're either pro-this or anti-that. It's never that you're pro-that but this was just a bad bill or it had some intolerable riders on it. Black and white.

I appreciate his frustration, though, that hypotheticals are treated as a no-no because there's something wrong with hypotheticals, per se. As you and he say, hypotheticals are Good Things.
