NEWS: OAKLAND TRIBUNE WITHDRAWS ARNOLD SUPPORT! SAYS ACTOR IS ONE SICK BASTARD!

Arnold's actions go beyond just behaving 'badly'
ARNOLD SAID, "I behaved badly sometimes. Yes, it's true."
But Arnold isn't a little boy on a school playground.

He's a larger-than-life man who wants to be governor of the great state of California, where there are decent people who want decent government.

The detailed sexual misconduct reports that have been published and admitted by Schwarzenegger go beyond the "behaved badly" level. They were disgusting and lewd, subjecting women to humiliation, and suggesting a sick mind.

My phone started ringing with calls from women friends who were in various states of anger -- from simmering to outrage. Ironically, some were feeding back the old one-liner Arnold has been using in his television commercials:

"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore."

If they had been undecided, now they had heard more than enough to convince them this was not the person they want running California, someone who should be a model to all young people.

These women were condemning the abuse we all feel when even one woman is abused -- just because she was born female. Most women have had some unpleasant experience with sexual harassment and know how demeaning it is.

One who called said she was disappointed in Arnold because she thought he might be the person she would vote for.

But now she couldn't. She thought she might not vote for any one of the 135 since Arianna had dropped out of the running. "Arianna was right," she said. "Remember how she said Arnold had implied he would like to put her head in the toilet when he said he wanted her for his next Terminator movie?"

When I went to get my hair cut, women in the shop were exchanging their opinions, even though we didn't know each other. We were just women in a beauty shop sounding off.

One said she knew Arnold came from the movie business culture, which can be "seamy and sleazy," but that didn't excuse him for such gross conduct. "No one decent would allow himself to be drawn into a gutter lifestyle," was how she put it.

Besides, I chimed in, there are lots of decent people in the movie business who don't do things like that. One who comes to mind is Tom Hanks, a former Oakland resident and graduate of Skyline High School. And many more. In fact, the movie people who make up the low-life culture are just that, the low lives of the movie business. Arnold should have risen above it, not joined them.

"It wasn't like he walked up, eyed your body and slid his arm around your waist," said Mary Beth. "What I read made me sick to my stomach. I can't imagine anyone with a healthy mind even thinking of doing such stuff to women."

At the office I called some of my political friends. I asked one about the Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal: "Did you feel angry about that conduct?"

"I did," said Chris. "Or at least I felt deeply disappointed, but it was a consensual sexual relationship, which is different than unwelcome advances."

That's true, I thought, but it was a power play on Clinton's part since Monica was only an intern. We expect more of presidents and governors, in fact, of all politicians who claim to represent us.

Like some of the women Arnold went after, there's no doubt Monica was dazzled by the celebrity and felt flattered that someone so important would show interest in her.

We can hope it was a necessary lesson in civics that won't be repeated, ever.

The whole country is watch-

ing California on this one. The last thing we need is a new governor with the stain of a sex scandal.
