here's the best analogy i've come across on this topic...

"Unless you use an anonymizer service that browses to web sites on your behalf (acting as middleman), any site YOU visit must necessarily know your IP, else it wouldn't know where to send the replies.

A TCP connection consists of a communication between two nodes. You contact a site giving your source IP, and the server accepts your connection and sends the reply packets on their way. This is typically not a security risk because you voluntarily initiate the connection.

You cannot order pizza without giving them your home address, right? Of course you could have your neighbor order it for you, then bring it over, i.e. you're using a pizza proxy. Same difference. A proxy is slower, more work, and the pizza won't be as hot..."
