It's a typical childish, amateurish tactic to avoid confronting a point of view one can't oppose with substance; if your opponent challenges you, claim that they support some wild, crazy, obscene idea that no one in their right mind could ever tolerate. Like "well you musta loved everythin' ol' Saddam ever did!"

You are so wrong that ergo, they must be right.

Any poli sci prof with a freshman PS101 course will fail students right away who try that trick. But it's considered righteous and uplifting coming from politicians and our favorite hate-talk radio hosts.

Part of the general dumbing down of America. "Sheet, yeah, we had to go take out that bad guy in Eye-raq, what the hell else could we have done?"
