I'm guessing here but I think the cause of this huge slippage between the two cultures was religious in nature.

I have a real sense of ambivalence about religion. On the one hand it has been the root of millenia of human stupidity and divisiveness...on the other, there are people who need a moral compass and find comfort in it. I personally think that you can be a good person without it.

Al, unfortunately, I think most Muslims would not agree with you. Religion plays a big role in their lives. They are supposed to pray to Allah 5 times a day. The prayers themselves take a while but then there is the preparation beforehand. You have to wash yourself three times and you should change into clean clothes......imagine doing that 5 times per day. Then there's the feast Ramadan where they fast daily for 30 days. Religious requirements are fairly extensive.

Like I said, religion has a big role in their lives.
