The Turks and Iraqis don't like each other......until the early 20th century, the Turks ruled the Iraqis under the Ottoman Empire. And they weren't too nice about it. Plus, in the north of Iraq, the Kurds predominate and the Turks have killed nearly as many Kurds as Saddam. And finally, like Iran, Turkey is experimenting with Islamic fundamentalism in its gov't. I think the major party is a fundamentalist one. We are trying to set up a secular democracy. We all know what happens when a democracy runs up against theocrats. Having said all that, we're desperate for more troops........we''ll take the Turks troops with open arms. Oops! Sorry! We aren't really desperate.........that's the liberal bias in me talking. Here's the FOX version of me. Actually, our troops were hoping to experience some foreign culture while on duty....kind of like a Grand Tour except in the ME, not Europe. Well, they had the experience of the Iraqis, some Brits and some Poles. That was good but now they were looking for something new. Rummie checked in with the Turks......their troops had some time off and frankly, we're hoping to get immersed in the American language and culture. Viola! Rummie and the Turks realized they had a fit. I understand in their first meeting, the Turks will wear native Turkish dress and do one of their native dances while the Americans will be loaded down with CDs, cigarettes and chocolates. It should be a FABULOUS time.....for EVERYONE! And when the Iraqis see two foreign groups getting along so well, it can't help but enrich their lives as well. It will be stunning. Just typing this brings tears to my eyes. Frankly, I can't help but think of GW and the vision he brings to us! Al, I know he saw the possibilities and made them happen. It wasn't easy......he had to tell a lot of lies.....but in the end, it will be worth it. At this point, a short rendition of God Bless America begins to be heard faintly in the background!! <ggg> ted *******************************************************Turkey has a long history of conquest in Iraq, besides, the Kurds hate the Turks. Am I off the mark, or do you also think this will backfire? I wonder what your ME course professor thinks? Al ======================================================== Turkey set for Iraq mission The US is said to have requested 10,000 Turkish troops The Turkish Government has decided to send troops to Iraq, in response to a request by the United States.
