Motorola Inc. MOT.N on Monday said it would spin off its semiconductor unit into a separate company as it focuses more closely on its battle with Nokia NOK.N NOK1V.HE over the mobile phone market.

The move by the No. 2 mobile phone maker was not a surprise but came sooner than expected and boosted Motorola's shares to a new high for the past year.
