We were very active against the soviet union and I don't recall us bombing them. One does not need to club people to death.

We bombed and killed a hell of a lot of its proxies, instead. And they killed a lot of us and our proxies.

The Cold War wasn't that cold, you know.

The Islamist and Baathist regimes follow the Cold War model in the mode of the Soviet support of terrorist groups as, indeed, they use elements of the Soviet ideological model.

Think Baader Meinhof or PLO and give them serious money and you have al Qaida and Hezbollah. The Soviets were very cautious and parsimonious and kept their terrorist clients on a short string. The Iranians, Saudis, and not quite dead yet Hussein regime, are not that way inclined.
