I certainly see your point about the "trend". Drunk horse riding was certainly more dangerous for the rider than anyone else unless they got in front of the horse. Cars and better roads and higher speeds changed things. There was a man in my county that hit another car head on killing the young dad in the other car and injuring the young wife and little son. The drunk driver was not hurt much of course. He had a long history of convictions for DUI and did minor jail time but was given more breaks than he should have been. After this accident their was a public outcry as to why the man was given such leniency. The judge gave him 15 years and even that was thought too easy by the public. It's just a sign of the times that the public is demanding that they be protected from drunk drivers before someone is hurt. I think to be realistic that any party that says we think drinking and driving should not be illegal has lost too much support right there to ever be a viable 3rd party. reality says the Libertarian Party has to make some concessions to the times we live in or be doomed to be a minor party forever. People vote. They are voting the protection they demand from drunk drivers. It may be gradualism but it's also a political reality today.

Gradualism has become far worse with the attack on smoking and the tobacco industry. Now that political trend is scary. Next it will be legal discrimination against obese people because their unhealthy habits are a drain on society. That trend is very scary.

Voluntary euthanasia.......I am afraid that it could be misused. Even by families who want to see an end to suffering. Making it legal would be opening pandora's box IMO. It's already practiced but quietly. I think it should be left that way. Not institutionalized.
