Thanks for backtracking. The original point about this came as a critique of the silly methodology Kevin Hassett used. A few more points.

1. I just read the link DaveM offered and made some comments there. No doubt, you will have read them by now. California is not at the top on per pupil costs, nor even on salaries when cost of living is taken into account. As one should.

2. It's been my impression for some time that the top of the line campuses have had difficulties attracting faculty because of salary constraints. I know of several folk in sociology who either left Berkley or refused to take job offers there because of that. I assume it's a system wide problem for the elite campuses.

3. When you go on to discuss eliminating tenure, that takes us a great deal further from the original bit about Hassett's methodology. But I can assure you, that if California eliminates tenure, that would be one of the quickest ways to destroy the higher education system.
