You are right, that cost of living is not included. Nevertheless, CA teachers have the highest average salary. NEA the source this time.

I believe that the $6800 is the amount of money the State the spends per student (prop 98). The $8899 (from a State of CA, website) per student includes money from other sources - like Federal Funds. I believe that when all funding is counted, I believe CA is still ranks in the 20's.

I realize that $54,000 is not a huge amount of money, but it is significantly greater than the National median household income (and possibly California's). And it also means that two teachers (married together) could easily have a household income in excess of $100,000.
