Frankfort Plant Board Launches VoIP Over HFC With Help From ARRIS

Thursday October 23, 1:26 pm ET

DULUTH, Ga., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Frankfort Plant Board, a 60-year old municipal utility providing CATV to nearly 20,000 customers in Frankfort and Franklin county, KY, has launched cable telephony over IP service using the ARRIS (Nasdaq: ARRS - News) Cadant® C4 CMTS and Touchstone(TM) Telephony Ports. Initial demand for the service has been very strong. As Ed Hancock, Frankfort's Assistant Superintendent, Telecommunications notes: "The quality of the telephone connection is excellent. We have had senior citizens tell us they can hear much better over our telephone service. Customers also realize big savings and appreciate the personal touch of our local customer service, which they don't get from a giant telephone company like BellSouth."

Frankfort Plant Board already offers digital video service, circuit switched voice (off its fiber network) for large business telephone users, long distance service, and cable modem HSD service. VoIP was a natural extension of its cable/telecom network services. Hancock adds: "Connected to our DMS-500 switch with a Nuera PSTN Gateway, the Cadant C4 CMTS serves as the interface to provide carrier-grade telephony over our existing plant as well as being able to handle our rapidly growing cable modem service. The Touchstone Telephony Ports make the local loop possible and will give us the flexibility of using either an external or internal unit at the home."

Frankfort switched over its cable modem subs last June with the introduction of the Cadant C4 CMTS. Since then, it has successfully tested and introduced its VoIP service, and is starting to make inroads against BellSouth by offering its triple play customers a 25-35% discount off voice.

In addition to the 20,000 homes Frankfort Plant Board passes, Frankfort is Kentucky's state capital, which represents thousands of potential state employee customers. Along with the Touchstone Telephony Ports and Modems and fully loaded Cadant C4 CMTS, Frankfort Plant Board uses Alopa MetaServ(TM) provisioning software.
