Interesting article Bill, thanks for posting it. Will Italy learn? I don't believe they will any time soon. Countries such as Slovenia and Croatia will more likely become wealthier and more vibrant economically as the years pass.

Currently, the country is embroiled in a big dispute regarding retirement. And on October 24th the entire nation is going to go on strike. Forget travelling or doing business in Italy on that day. Lost productivity? Few seem to care.

I recently heard on the Island of Sardinia, where I live, the unemployment rate is close to 50% during the non tourist season.

They say America is the land of opportunity, I believe this more and more everyday. Wonderful people, with a wonderful culture of family and community cannot exist indefinitely unless they have an opportunity to work, to create wealth and to grow. What prevents this in a place like Italy can be summed up in two words. Statism and Feudalism.

Both are firmly in control in Italy.

I better go, I have to take off work and hand carry my money to the Post Office in order to pay the electric bill today. But don't worry, I'll take a two hour reposo (nap) and feel better about my productivity later. :)
