Australian Senate Censures PM Howard Over Iraq War
story.news.yahoo.com

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia's Senate censured Prime Minister John Howard Tuesday for misleading the country about the reasons for going to war against Iraq (news - web sites).

The motion to censure the prime minister was put by Greens' Senator Bob Brown, who said Howard misled Australians by claiming Iraq had weapons of mass destruction that posed a threat to Australia.

The motion in the Senate, where Howard's ruling Liberal/National coalition does not have a majority, won the support of the minor party Democrats, Greens and independents. It was passed 33-30.

The government dismissed the motion as a political stunt.

Before the war, the Senate declared it had no confidence in Howard, the first time since parliament was formed more than 100 years ago that support was withdrawn for a sitting prime minister. It also censured the government over its deployment of troops to Iraq.
