China: becoming a major tourist source

BEIJING, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Chinese tourists are being spotted at an ever-widening circle of locations as they increasingly opt for adventure rather than cost-savings.

Chinaview.com reports China's travel agencies are being inundated by requests for information about long-distance destinations, such as New Zealand, Australia, Germany and South Africa. This is occurring as China's nearby areas, such as Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, are becoming less popular.

Chinese travel agency officials say up to now Chinese travelers have chosen short distance trips abroad because such destinations are comparatively cheap. But that's changing, partly due to the increasingly large numbers of tourists visiting China.

Those tourists -- from nations such as Switzerland, Japan, Germany, Austria, the United States and France -- often promote their own nations as travel destinations while touring China.

Chinaview.com said the World Tourism Organization estimates China will become the fourth largest tourist source nation by 2020, with overall annual travel expenditure by Chinese people surpassing $20 billion.
