ASMI files patent suit against Applied Materials

BILTHOVEN, The Netherlands -- Chip-equipment maker ASM International N.V. and its subsidiary, ASM America Inc., today (Oct. 7, 2003) announced that they have filed a suit against Applied Materials Inc. for patent infringement.

The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, alleges that Applied has infringed upon six of ASMI's U.S. patents and seeks injunctive relief from manufacturing, selling, or distributing any infringing products. The complaint also seeks actual and enhanced damages for Applied's willful infringement.

No other details were given about the suit by ASMI of the Netherlands. ASMI and Applied compete in the epitaxial reactor and low-k CVD markets, it was noted.

The suit may be related to a report earlier this year, in which ASMI filed suit against Applied over reactor cleaning (see April 29 story).
